Faith in Pink
We invite you to join the Northwest Ohio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure in the fight against breast cancer by participating in Faith in Pink.
We are inviting local churches to select a date in May to help educate the members of your respective congregations on breast health and breast cancer.
Churches have the opportunity to celebrate survivors that day in their congregation as well as honor those who have lost their battle.
Your church will receive a packet of free breast health educational materials, a sample script with breast health information to share with your members and participating ideas for this event. Each individual church is responsible for coordinating the event at their service.

Survivor Guidebook Helps
Recovery
Hearing that you have breast cancer is a
traumatic experience, but one that you do not have to experience alone. Many
Survivors, both women and men, are providing support to newly diagnosed patients
in our community.
To help those who have been diagnosed with
breast cancer, The Northwest Ohio Affiliate has developed a Survivor Guidebook.
It will help those newly diagnosed and
undergoing active treatment navigate through the decisions concerning treatment
and complementary therapies, show where to find support groups and other
services, as well as provide useful information concerning breast cancer.
The newly released guidebook is already
having an impact and helping those diagnosed chart the path to becoming
survivors.
“This helped me get control of all my
appointments, info and phone numbers,” said one recently diagnosed patient who
has started using the Survivor Guidebook. “This is very thoughtful and I feel
more in control.”
The Survivor Guidebook will be available at
the Affiliate office, The Victory Center and breast cancer surgeon offices.
For more information, call the Affiliate
office at 419-329-2137.

Record-breaking $563,940 in
Grants for Research, Education, Screening and Treatment
The
Northwest Ohio affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure
awarded grants totaling more than $428,940 to eight area
programs on March 6.
The grants
will fund a variety of community-based breast health
education and breast cancer screening and treatment
programs for the medically underserved.
Several
smaller projects were awarded $20,000 to fund additional
educational, screening, treatment and supportive
outreach programs throughout the 18 county service area.
In addition, over
$135,000 will help fund Komen national research grants
for a total of over
$563,940 for 2007-2008
Komen Northwest Ohio funding granted.
These grants
are made possible through the generous contributions and
local community support of Komen events such as the
annual Komen Race for the Cure.
In order to
ensure its funds make the greatest impact, Komen
affiliates work with local medical experts and community
leaders to conduct comprehensive community needs
assessments. After a community profile has been
completed it is then used to establish local grant

Three steps to better breast health
Through education and medical advances, more cases of
breast cancer are being detected in the earlier stages
of the disease, when the are more easily and
successfully treated. The three steps to early detection
and better breast health are:
1) Breast self-exam (BSE)
is a screening method that is intended to find early
tumors, particularly those that develop in the time
between annual mammograms and clinical breast exams.
Breast self-exams should be conducted monthly beginning
at age 20.
2) Clinical breast exams (CBE)
are physical examinations performed by physicians, nurse
practioners or other trained medical staff. A clinical
breast exam should be conducted every three years
beginning at age 20, and annually beginning at age 40.
3) Mammography is a
technique that uses x-rays to provide an image of the
breast. These images called mammograms are used to find
potential signs of breast cancer. Overall, mammography
is the best screening tool available today. Starting at
age 40, women should get a mammogram every year. Women
under the age of 40, but with a family history, other
risk factors or reasons for concern, should consult a
trained medical professional about when to have a
mammogram.

You choose the date. You choose the
outfit.
You make the difference.
