Our Community Need

The first Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in our area was held in 1994, and the Northwest Ohio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® was founded in 1999. Since 1994, Komen Northwest Ohio has raised over $7 million to support local breast health programs throughout community grants program. In addition to the grants program, the Affiliate offers education and information about breast health, screening, early detection, and breast cancer. The Affiliate provides health programs and participates in community, corporate, and faith based education events and programs targeting specific at-risk populations. Furthermore, the Affiliate strongly believes in pursuing a systemic change to improve the lives of people with breast cancer through public policy efforts.

The purpose of the biennial Community Profile is to provide an overview of the state of breast cancer in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan, to inform program planning and service delivery not only for the Northwest Ohio Affiliate, but for the entire northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan breast health and breast cancer community.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s promise is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to discover the cures. To meet this promise, Affiliates rely on the information obtained through the Community Profile process to guide them in the work they must accomplish in their communities. The Community Profile is the assessment process used by affiliates every two years to understand the state of breast cancer in their service areas.  A quality Community Profile guarantees that all Komen Affiliates are focused in mission and non-mission work that is targeted, effective, and non-duplicative.  The Komen Northwest Ohio Affiliate will use the Community Profile to:

  • Drive inclusion efforts throughout the Affiliate service area
  • Identify and establish focused granting priorities
  • Identify and establish focused educational priorities
  • Strengthen sponsorship efforts – “Tell the Story”
  • Drive public policy efforts
  • Establish directions of marketing and outreach
  • Align both strategic and operational plans
